Stage 1 (20 mins)

Pressure/Jockey/Delay (15 min)

Delay is a defensive principle that slows down the opposition attack to allow cover to get behind the pressure on the ball. Defending player (Gray) applies Immediate pressure on the ball, arcs approach and gets left/right foot forward to push attacking player on their weaker foot, jockey the player to delay the play with actually taking the ball. One ball, three pennies. Defender passes the ball to the attacker. The attacker attempts to dribble past the defender or pass to the target player. The defender must win the ball, knock it out of the area or delay the attacker for 5 seconds.

Coaching Points:

-Jockey withing arms reach (Extend the arm to touch, push & tug opponent)

-Keep body goalside

-Left or right foor forward ushering the opposition to one side

-Get low, bend at the hips & knees. Use arms to stay in balance

-Play on balls of the feet, avoid shifting weight onto the heels, have "Busy feet" to keep balance

-Eyes on the ball, not the player

-Don't dive in, defend the space zonaly & track the opposition

-Force the opposition to weaker foot, away from goal, to the line or to your cover player
