Set Up: As shown on diagram, side dependant on intensity L/M/H, players in 2 teams with GKs.
Format: Possession team look to build from defensive safe zone through the middle into attacking zone to score. Defenders adopt mid-block & look to press at right times to win the ball & counter to score. Play will always start with GK.
Progressions: Defending team can decide to send a player into defensive zone to press.
Key Points: SETTING TRAPS• The out-of-possession team should attempt to set traps for their opponents to play into. These traps should be set in the outside channels, with the aim of locking play out wide.• Once the opponents have played into a trap, players should press with intensity and try to win the ball.
PROTECTING THE MIDDLE• Protecting the middle of the pitch is essential when attempting to set a trap. The defending unit needs to maintain short distances between one another in order to prevent split passes breaking lines. • Although remaining compact is crucial, the defensive unit also needs to understand that when they become too compact, it becomes easy for their opponents to play around them and progress in wide areas.
ANTICIPATION• A high level of anticipation is key throughout. Players should attempt to read triggers as to where their opponent will pass next. • Players should aim to remain one step ahead of the player in possession to win the ball back through tackles or interceptions.AGGRESSIVE PRESSING• Once the team has decided to initiate a press, the whole team must move as a collective. When pressing, players should work at maximum intensity and put as much pressure as possible on the ball-carrier. • The mentality to press aggressively is integral to regaining possession.
COACHING DETAIL:MANAGING THE OPPOSITIONCONTROLLING THE TEMPO• The attacking team should be encouraged to circulate possession and make passes that might entice the opposition to press. • Once the opponents have initiated a press, the attackers should increase the tempo of their play in order to play away from this pressure and find space
