4v4 to Target Play: Building

This exercise should help with building out of the back as well as possession to create chances to score.

You must play at least 1 target player before going to goal. If you are able to get the ball to both target players and score you receive 2 points.

Target player must play in their zone. You can expand the zone wider if you want more movement from the target player, but I like making it smaller in this exercise, so that 1-2 players drop down similar to building out with a goalkeeper.

Coaching Points:

- When the target player has the ball how can we open up to receive and play forward.

- Reading the game to anticipate where the open space or open goal is.

- Receiving on the half turn and finding pockets of space to turn.

Directional possession (15 mins)

Setup: Use 10 cones to create a rectangle 20x15 as shown.

4v4 or 3 v3 depending on numbers. (If 3v3 shrink rectangle to 15x10 with end zones only 3yds wide and midfield 8) 1 ball, 4 pinnies. If odd numbers ad a neutral to the midfield area

Activity: Directional possession game. Each team is given a side to protect and are attempting to score by dribbling into their opponents end zone. Each team must have one support player in their own endzone at all times. Objective is to keep possession while trying to work the ball into a forward position to be able to dribble into the opponents endzone. A point will only be awarded for dribbling into the endzone (i.e. no players are allowed to park inside opponents endzone to receive a pass). If successful, ball re-starts with opposite teams defender.

Coaching points:

Stress team shape to create space

Communication

Mobility-effective movement off the ball into support positions (provide passing lanes)

Don't force the ball- if we can't move forward, cycle the ball and try again.

Main Activity-Directional Possession continued (20 mins)

Setup: 10 cones 7 pinnies 1 color and a neutral pinny, 1 ball. Rectangle 20x40. (In pineglen facility, use half of a quarter field)

Make 2 end zones 5yds wide with the midfield area 30. Can adjust field size based on numbers and size of players. 2 even sides 6v6 or 7v7. If odd numbers, add a neutral.

Each team will have 2 defenders in their end zone, 1 target player in attacking end zone, and remaining players in the midfield area.

Activity: Game initially starts with coach serving ball into one team. Objective is for the team in possession to attempt to earn a point by moving the ball through the midfield and into the target player in their opponents end zone. Defending team tries to win the ball and do the same. A point is scored by successfuly playing into your target player. Game does not stop on a successful point, team in possession will attempt to keep possession and continue scoring points. Play only stops if ball is played out of bounds. Restart from coach service to opposite team. Players must stay in their assigned zones but are free to move anywhere within that zone.

Can add a second striker in endzone if players struggle with 2v1

Coaching points

Stress good team shape to create space

Communication

Head up to see the field

Mobility-effective movement off the ball into support positions (provide passing lanes)

Good body position to play forward if possible.

Effective decision making (don't force what isn't there)

6 Zone game - Building up play (25 mins)

Set Up: Using approximatey half the field play 7v7. The field is divided into three channels as ahown in diagram.

Team tht starts with possession must must play through all three zones before they are allowed to score. Once the opposition wins the ball they are allowed to go directly to goal and we hhave a regular game without restrictions until the ball goes out of play. Once the ball goes out of play the team that starts with it must play through all three channels before trying to score
