Session focuses on defensive recovery runs, getting defensively organised & keeping the team shape.

SET UP: Half pitch, 4 groups split into 2 teams.
PROCEDURE: First player runs up to the opposite traffic cone and as they pass, the opposite team player chases the the player back and tries to tag them. On passing their opposite traffic cone they are then chased back up by their opponents next player and so on.

SET UP: Half pitch, two groups (attackers v defenders), 3 goals.
PROCEDURE: Goalkeeper feeds the ball out to the 1st defender who takes a touch and then plays the ball up to one of the attackers and then goes on to close them down. Once the attackers pass the recovering defender situated in the centre of the field, the 2nd defender make a recovery run around one of the side traffic cones to help defend. Attackers attack the main goal and if the defenders win the ball they can attack any of the two side goals.
PROGRESSION: 3v3
COACHING POINTS: Awareness of player on the ball and player(s) making runs, track back quickly, positioning of 1st and 2nd defenders.

SET UP: Half pitch split into 3 zones, two teams set up with a 3-4-1 formation.
PROCEDURE: Players must play in their zone but can have one player progress into the next zone when their team has possession. Players must track back when they loose possession.
PROGRESSION: Take zones away/free play
COACHING POINTS: Intelligent runs with or without possesion, tracking back quickly to keep the team shape (don't get caught out of position), 1st/2nd defender duties.

SET UP: Half pitch split into 2 zones (defensive/attacking half), two teams set up with a 3-4-1 formation.
PROCEDURE: Team must all track back into their own half when they loose possession but must leave one to stay up in the attacking half.
PROGRESSION: Free play.
COACHING POINTS: Track back quickly and adopt best position (pick up/support/cover), lone striker to chase ball and delay the defensive team to break forward to allow the defensive team to get organised and compact their defensive half.

Warm Up (10 mins)
SET UP: Half pitch, ball per player.
PROCEDURE: Players with a ball each dribble up to and in line with the coach. They leave their ball and run back to the start line before returning to their ball and dribbling up to and in line with the coach. The coach moves up and down across the half pitch.
PROGRESSION: Add dynamic return run and high intensity run back to ball.
COACHING POINTS: Build up tempo and discipline.
