Crossing & Finishing

Based on a Villereal Crossing & Finishing session.

The blacks start with one of the wide players crossing the ball into the areas depicted. The blacks remain on the right wing and do not change until you have a break and then want to. Try to keep position specific if possible.

When the blacks pick up the ball from behind their start zone, that is the signal for the first group (Reds) to begin their movement (beginning of Zone 14) into the box for the impending cross from the blacks. Once they have completed the cross, the Reds then move to the sprint box and conduct a sprint.

Concurrently to the 1st cross, the blues have completed their sprint and will take the position of where the yellows are.

The yellows on completion of the 1st cross then become the waiting forwards as shown on the blue line.

You can now see the rotation and the session carries on.

Coaching points can vary from communications from the wide players, the movement of the forward players and the positioning of the GK when the cross starts.

The sprinting players are to move as quickly as possible recreating the movement out from the back to counter attack.

Progression; The 3rd player after each cross stays to defend, therefore 3 v 1. You could also switch the sprint zones to cross from the LHS. Give the crosser specific targets; ie; PTA between pen spot & the 6 yard box.
