Description

Practice Objective  = Defenders Defending Centrally within a 7v7 Game

Defending Principles:

  • Identify and establish the line of pressure
  • Narrow & Compact
  • Angle runs to cut off passing channels.
  • Defend as a team: If the ball moves, the team moves
  • Establish triggers for pressing the opposition
  • High intensity press
  • Establish cover and balance in the back.
  • Recovery runs to close gaps between units.
  • Ball must be pressed in dangerous areas, no ball watching
Practice Outcome: 

 

  • Players understanding roles & responsibilities for defenders defending centrally within a 7v7 game.
  • Players understand narrow & compact when defending along with other defending principles and know how to implement these skills into a game situation and why.
  •  Discipline and patience in executing decisions.
  •  How to force play wide and how to use the sidelines as an advantage to the defending teams.
  •  They have gained practical and theoretical knowledge of how to defend in the given situation.

Session Structure

 

  • Intro & tactics board – 5 mins
  • Open play 3 mins – Step in on issue – Coach starting point
  • Open play 5 mins – Stepping in on issues – Coach next point following on from starting point.
  • Open play uninterrupted remaining time – 4 mins
  • Debrief – 3 mins

Method:

 

  •  Introduce myself to the group and explain what topic I am going to cover.
  • Use tactics board to show how we are reducing it from a standard 11v11 to a 7v7 focusing on Defenders defending in a central area. (Removing the wide areas of pitch)
  • Demonstrate on the tactics board what the main key points we want both teams to work on in the session.
  • Clarify with players main points lead with open answers to see if the players understand before commencing on pitch.
  • Ask if there are any questions and if they have any questions throughout the session to not to be afraid to ask.
  • Organise players into positions to pick up bibs already placed in the playing area.

Continuation to show the 7v7 Central area being used for this session.

 

Organization:

 

 

  • 7v7 including 2 GK’s – Formation for both team is 1-2-3-1
  • Red Team Defending & Blue Team Attacking.
  • Set of bibs for each team.
  • Full size goals at each end of the area.
  • Group of balls at goals & sidelines to allow for quick restarts
  • If the ball goes out over the sidelines it restarts with a pass in.
  • If the ball goes out over the end lines or either team score it restarts with attacking team’s keeper at halfway line.

 

 

Area of the Pitch:

  • Length- Just over half pitch x Width- 18 Yard box

 

Role of the Opposition:

  • Attacking play with emphasis on creating goal scoring opportunities through the central area of the pitch.

Phase 1



 

Method:

 

  • Play starts with Yellow Keeper passing to either Blue 4/5.
  • Red team establish a pressure line - (Yellow Line)
  • 9 Red arcs run to prevent the ball travelling to opposite CB while also forcing the play wide.
  • Rest of midfield are using this pressure as a Que for them to start pressing and cut off passes into centre of pitch.

Coaching Points:

 

  • Starting positions/Orientation on both teams.
  •  Identify and establish the line of pressure.
  •  9 arcs run to stop to cut off the pass to opposite CB and aims to force play wide.
  • First 3 minutes uninterrupted play to allow players to work on objective and to make mistakes.
  •  Opposition’s role is to create goal scoring opportunities through central areas of the pitch.
  •  Create Width & Depth along with other attacking principles such as:
    • Good quality/selection of passes
    • Look for penetrating runs with or without ball
    • Create space and angles
    • Penetrating runs with or without ball

Phase 2

 

Method:

 

  • When the ball is moved from one side of the pitch to the other the Red team move together as a team to close gaps between the lines. (Shifting left & right together).
  •  Red 6 comes more central to cut off the passing lanes & to make the pitch narrow & compact.
  •  Pressure is applied to all Blue players from Red 10 onto Blue 6, Red 4 onto Blue 9.
  • Cover is provided at the back by Red 5.

 

Coaching Points:

 

  • Narrow and compact without the ball.
  •  Force play wide.
  •  Defend as a team.
  •  Ball must be pressed in dangerous areas, no ball watching.
  • Coaching in the flow to coach players on the different scenarios that they may encounter.
  •  Encouragement to players to keep standards high while and coaching in the flow to give individual coaching points to the player but making sure the game is still playing.

Phase 3

Method:

 

  • Using the touchline as an advantage the Red team can apply the pressure to win possession back.
  • When the Red team regain possession, they transition to attack by scoring into the opposition goal on the halfway line.

 

Coaching Points:

  • Body shape to receive to play forward when ball is won back.
  •  Quality of passing (accuracy, weight, timing)
  •  Quick transition from defending to get your head up and see what the attacking options are.
  •  Open play for the remaining 4 minutes allowing both teams to play the game using the coaching points that you have focused on throughout the session from start to finish.
  •  Allowing the players enough time to get a chance to implement all they have learned in the session.
  •  Make it game realistic as much as possible – Even numbers.
