As players arrive

Players never all arrive at the same time! Such is the nature of coaching grassroots players. Arrival times are entirely predicated on when a parent or adult guardian can get them to the field. So with that in mind, the coach must arrive early and have all of the necessary equipment available. The players upon their arrival can then gather up the equipment necessary to organize their fields and then play. They assume complete control of their playing environment and the rules by which they'll play. A couple of important things to be mindful of- A) What if one player arrives a bit early with no others having already arrived? Easy! This player can spend some time playing 1 v 1 with the coach! When the next player arrives, he / she can jump in to replace the coach. B) What if there are an odd number amount of players? Simply share with the players that it is their task to sort it out. ("Sort it out."...three magic words!). The bottom line is that whenever they arrive, the gear is waiting, players will be arriving to fill out their games, and they have been empowered to sort it all out on their own. The coach maintains a watchful eye to ensure safety and gauge any problem solving issues sorted out by the players.

Per the direction of the coach the players are asked to bring in all the equipment they were using upon their arrival to training. The players are to sort out the equipment as they were when they arrived. Why? This is another layer of teaching organization and cooperation. The coach may also indicate a time by which this must be completed- "Have all the equipment sorted out within 1 minute!...Go!" Be sure to let the group know when they've completed the task well. Using a portable white board (visual learning), instruct the players to create playing grids that can accommodate games featuring 4 v 4. Depending on the number of players, the coach can instruct the players to also create spaces that can accommodate lesser numbers (2 v 2, 3 v 3). The rules by which they play is entirely left to the players.

The players have now organized their games relative to the numbers available. In the example noted, there is one game featuring a 4 v 4, another being 3 v 3, and the last a 2 v 2. The key component is that they are playing soccer. The coach is ever watchful so as to eventually call all the players in to ask questions about their respective games. Using guided learning, questions are posed as to sort out any observed issues by the coach. What are ways by which the players could address these issues? Through their answers, they are then sent back to implement the solutions they came up with. The coach may also add a "plus" element by asking the players for example to see if they can beat a defender 1 v 1 while playing. To the untrained observer, it may appear that the coach is doing very little if anything. But in reality, he / she is facilitating the environment in which the players are challenged by their games and asking appropriate questions for them to then go out and execute. Some of the questions asked by the coach may have to do with the playing space they created. Is the space too small? Too big? The coach may ask questions about the balance of ability of each team. Is one team dominant? How might you fix that? Everything asked is based upon the observations of the coach.

Remember, the topic of this session has to do with problem solving. Therefore, the environments are altered to pose challenges to the players both technically and tactically. This is an "Attack 2 - Defend 2" activity where the players are formulated in a 4 v 4 fashion. There are no goalkeepers and the goals which are utilized are oversized which increases the possibility of scoring goals. The environment in which the players are competing offers both technical and tactical implications. The players are challenged technically in the areas of dribbling, passing, receiving, tackling, and shooting. Tactical implications arise when the players must assess which goal to attack and why and conversely, which goal must be defended and why. Balls that go over the end line, side line, or scored results in the game being restarted by a kick in which is free; i.e. the game resumes when a player receives the ball.

This is a game which features the goals being pulled off the end line and reversed. This change in environment now forces the players to adjust both technically and tactically Like the previous activity, there are no goalkeepers and the goals which are utilized are oversized which increases the possibility of scoring goals. The players are challenged technically in the areas of dribbling, passing, receiving, tackling, and shooting. Tactical implications arise when the players must assess which side of the goal they should enter either with or without the ball. Balls that go over the end line, side line, or scored results in the game being restarted by a kick in which is free; i.e. the game resumes when a player receives the ball. This is a fascinating game to observe by the coach who continues (when necessary) to employ the method of bringing the players in and through guided learning help them sort out any challenges.

The last portion of the training session features the players participating in an actual 4 v 4 game. When it is age appropriate, the inclusion of goalkeepers is acceptable (5 v 5). All rules pertaining to the game apply. Before the game begins, the coach brings the group together to ask about some of the things they've learned in the prior activities and play. In essence through that method the coach is planting the seeds of moments that learning took place. That lays the groundwork for the coach to observe and see if indeed those areas manifest themselves in the game.

In summation, the players from the moment they arrive are immersed in game like activities and the actual game itself. The "coaching" which takes place manifests itself through observation, guided learning through the Socratic Method. The idea of street soccer has been complimented by the structure of the session and the activities implemented. Last but not least, from the very beginning of the session, the coach is an enthusiastic cheerleader and supporter of creative play. have fun out there!
