Principles of play: Movement, Support and creating space (retain, build and progress to penetrate)
Theme: Technical/ tactical: Using "lanes" to divide the pitch so players can develop their spatial awareness off the ball, when their team is in possession. This helps develop positional play, creating & exploiting space and passing & receiving.
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Technical Passing and receiving: pass selection, direction, height, speed and body part to receive, split stance back foot, forward foot) |
|
Tactical Creating and exploiting space to create gaps in the oppositions team |
|
Physical Movement to receive and create space for others. |
|
Psychological Decision making with the ball (whether to dribble, shoot or pass and which player to pass to). Using lanes to make space for others and be available for team mate, learning to combine effectively. |
|
Social Verbal and non-verbal cues, using the running in game call, using eye contact, hand gestures. Improved cohesion. |
Organisation: Team in possession (focus) playing 1-2-3-2-1 against a 1-3-3-2, 8v6 (can also do 7v6 or 6v6 or 6v5 dependant on numbers (1 team in possesion has a goalkeeper)). Ensure there are plenty of footballs by the goal to ensure repetition. Aim to get the ball into one of the mini goals, angled to encourage forward angled passes or score a goal.
Starter: The game is played with Netball rules, player with the ball cannot travel with the ball but can throw to a team mate. Team out of possession must attempt to intercept, 1m gap between the player with the ball and opposing team players. If the opposing team intercept, they attempt to throw the ball into the large goal, white team (team originally in possession) must attempt to win back quickly, if they do and lose the ball again, the practise restarts (3-5 minutes)
Main session: Now the practise start with the goalkeeper who must throw it or take a goal kick opposition can not tackle but can intercept or block (5-10 minutes). After some successes by the team in possession (white team), allow tackling (full pressure, no sliding tackles) (10-15 minutes), rotate players so both sets of players get an opportunity to try different positions and scenarios in this practise. Adapt numbers to suit ability and number if players on the day. (10.15-11.00)
Individual focus: Defensive midfielder (4)
Unit focus: 4 with Goallkeeper (1) with centre backs (5&6) to receive (wide players (2 and 3) also if goalkeeper goes long), 2 and 3 to disperse and attacking midfielders (7 and 8) to penetrate.
Primary focus: Ensure players where possible are not in the same lane in possession, wide players hug the touchline to make the pitch big.
Secondary focus: Can we get the number 4 on the ball to dictate play/ where the ball goes.
Tertiarty: If possession is lost, can we win the ball quickly (6 seconds) and counter attack (Transition element) with our shape and overloads on the pitch.
Opposition management: Press to win the ball and disrupt possession and attempt to score in transition by occupying lanes closest to the ball (3, see if the can figure out how many lanes) During breaks in play get group to discuss ways they can win the ball and create opportunities.
Coaching position: Primarily with the 4 then moving around the field to praise good moments of play.
Coaching points:
- Pass execution/ penetration e.g. technique of pass (particularly for longer more difficult passes) passed to back foot, thigh, chest etc. good height, pace of pass, curl if needed.
- Decision making selection of pass type (short/ long), height, part of foot, which foot passing to (receiving player), which player (are they marked? are they outnumbered in their area of the pitch? Can they combine to overload their area of the pitch?)?
- Width and dispersal: create width and disperse to create space in central areas for 4, 8 and 10 in middle lanes.
- Supporting players positioning and movement off the ball to support current and future player on the ball (difficult).
- Supporting players move in front of, away or behind defender as necessary, half turn to receive.
Interventions: Allow players to have a go for ten minutes and guide learning by questioning how we can support the player on the ball (use of tactic board) and who are directly working with the defensive midfielder (units)? During play regularly praise and re-iterate coaching points with defensive midfielder and other parts of the units. Second ten minutess use stop stand still in repeated instances when possession has been maintained using the lanes, when possession has been lost when bunched up or both. Afterwards discuss what went well, even better if? Last 5-10, discuss how the session has improved and note periods of prolonged possession or quick penetration which lead to a goal (if filming show video).

SSG: Allow the players to play with 7v7, 7v6 or 6v6 with offsides (if they enter the penalty area before the ball) using formations based on 1-2-3-2-1 (1-2-3-1) and 1-3-3-2 (1-3-1-2), and re-iterate coaching points. Every 5 minutes allow players to change positions and encourage team in possession to use the width of over 3 lanes and the team out of possession to stay within 2-3 lanes (adjacent). Allow 10 minutes of uninterrupted play
Coaching poisiton: Primarily from the side, but on the field to encourage and guide where to move and support (using empty lanes).

AA - 3 lane game (20 mins)
Arrival activity - 3v3 with goalkeeper(s) in space between half way line and edge of penalty box. Players in groups of 3 (or 2, adapt where ncessary), play against each other on individual pitches. Ball starts with goalkeeper for white team where they take a goal kick or throw the ball to a team mate without opposition. The aim is to get the ball into the mini goals, using the lanes as guidance (3 players, 3 lanes). The opposition can shoot at the big goal if they win the ball back. The team in possession can pass back to their goalkeeper restart their attack unopposed. Throw ins or kicks ins are taken if the ball goes out of bounds. Alternate teams so each time plays with a goalkeeper who is protecting a goal and against different opposition, each games lasts 3 minutes. Practise time 15-20 minutes. (9.50-10.10)
Progressions:
- A player can use the goalkeeper for a minimum of 4-5 seconds unopposed. This time limit can also be applied on throw/ kick ins/
- All in; the goalkeeper can now be pressed instantly, players can go into the penalty area. If a red player enters the penalty area before the ball, they are deemed offside.
Coaching points:
Support: Players make the play area wide and long at an angle to the player on the ball and on the half turn so they can receive on the back foot, with the intention of getting forward.
Movement: making the area wide and long, by moving infront, behind or away from the defender.
Penetrate: Look to pass forward to create scoring opportunities.
Retain and build: Selection of pass, pace of pass, pass to furthest foot away from defender angled pass, backward if not forward, avoid "square" or straight pass during possession, to keep ball away from defenders.
Creativity: 1v1 skills to unbalance defenders or disguise off pass e.g. no look, to penetrate.
Interventions: get players to discuss how to score more points at each interval, coach can guide based on coaching points (write some what ifs?), indivdual coaching during or between games.
Coaching position: On the sides of each game and on the pitch to help individuals where appropriate
Can have pairs and have 2v2 or 3v2 games also with only 1 goalkeeper, can also exchange mini goals for another goal or have a floating player if there is more than one game going on (in other half of pitch)
