Using a half pitch, play begins with the keeper rolling the ball out to an advancing player. On receiving the pass the player passes forward to the next player and makes an overlapping run to receive the ball back. They then pass to the goalkeepers hands and the exercise repeats.
Drill is performed going right then onto the left side.
Coaching points:
- Good 1st touch (to go forward)
- Check runs (create space in behind the defender)
- Speed (to make overlapping run)
- Weight of pass (pass in front for player to run onto)
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
This progression the advancing player now looks for a bounce pass back (1-2 pass) before making the overlapping run. This is to help draw the defender further in to create the space in the wide area.
Coaching points:
- Good 1st touch (to go forward)
- Check runs (create space in behind the defender)
- Movement off the ball (draw defender)
- Speed (to make overlapping run)
- Weight of pass (pass in front for player to run onto)

In this progression pressure is now added by replacing the two mannequinns with active defenders. The squad is divided into to two groups; attackers (black) defenders (red). The attackers combine to create overlapping opporunities and attempt to shoot at the defenders goal. If the defenders win the ball they try and pass up to the attackers goalkeeper.
Rotation: Attackers 1-2-3 Defenders swap two at a time.
Coaching points:
- Good 1st touch (to go forward)
- Check runs (create space in behind the defender)
- Movement off the ball (draw defender)
- Speed (to make overlapping run)
- Weight of pass (pass in front for player to run onto)
- Build up play (create overlapping opportunities)
- Decision making (when & where)

Using a 40x60 pitch this is a game of attacking overloads. The game starts with a 2v1 (with keepers) in the attackers favour. Every time the ball is dead both teams (attackers & defenders) bring on an extra player until all players are on the pitch (8v8). Play always restarts from the attacker's keeper. After several minutes change teams over.
Coaching points:
- Good 1st touch (to go forward)
- Check runs (create space in behind the defender)
- Movement off the ball (draw defender)
- Speed (to make overlapping run)
- Weight of pass (pass in front for player to run onto)
- Build up play (create overlapping opportunities)
- Decision making (when & where)

Using a 40x60 pitch teams play 8v8 3-1-3 Vs 3-3-1 (to help create overloads)

Warm up (10 mins)
Using a half pitch 3 players run out from the bye line and receive a pass from the goalkeeper. Players combine together passes but must make an overlapping run after making the pass.
Progression: Bounce pass back (1-2 pass).
Coaching points:
- Good 1st touch in
- Drive in to create space in behind for overlap
- Speed to make the overlapping run
