Coaching Points for the ‘Holding Centre Midfield Player’
1. Look at screening the forward pass into the forwards feet
2. Can you cover, from behind the two centre midfield players?
3. Continue to scan the space for the forwards movements into your zone.
4. When the ball is played into the forward can you put pressure from the front and play on the forwards first touch, to maybe pinch the ball?
5. Continue to monitor your space for the wingers rotating and coming in off the line.

Functional Practice (30 mins)
Aim
The aim of the session is to improve the defensive understanding of a ‘Holding Centre Midfield Player’ within a 4-3-3 formation when playing against a 4-3-3 and with the ball in a central area of the pitch.
Description
The pitch is marked out as shown; everyone must stay with their own area for the first part until players understand the practice.
The blue team look to play into the forward area where the forward player looks to score.
The two blue wide players can go and join in to create a 3v2 in the attacking area.
If the White team win possession they look to counter attack quickly with a longer pass wide (into the small goals) which are used to represent passes to the wide midfield players to start a counter attack.
