General Practice - In Possession - Breaking Lines (10 mins)

Key Factors

  • To develop the players understanding on how to 'Break the lines';
    • When and how to play through around or over the opposition based on the pressure being applied.
    • How 'moving the ball quickly/finding the spare player' can assist in this.
    • How 'moving into the attacking shape' can also assist in this.

Organisation

  • 25x25y grid, with a 5 yard channel running through the middle (as shown).
  • 3 groups of 4/5 players, split into units. (defenders, midfielders & attackers).
  • Leave bibs in grids.

Timings

  • 1:30 minutes each x 3 (ease in)
  • 1:30 minutes each x 3 (competitive)

Explanation

  • Ball starts with one of the groups on the outside (green or red). And they must retain the ball for 4 passes.
  • 1 person from the central group presses the outside group.
  • Once the 4 passes are played they must then 'break the line' and transfer to the opposite outside group, without the defensive team intercepting.
  • Once the line is broke, the closest man in the middle group must apply immediate pressure on the ball.
Coaching Points
  • Try to play through, around or over the opposition.
  • Make the pitch big when in possession (Width & Depth)
  • Use limited touch and move the ball quickly
  • Try to play in areas which allow you to see 3 corners of the pitch.
  • Look to play forward.
  • Play passes in areas to assist in passing forward.

Management points

  • Defend narrow
  • Prevent split passes
  • Force the play wide
  • Protect the space in behind.

Targets/Challenges/Conditions

3 points for splitting the opposition.

1 point for playing 'around' the opposition.

Limit touches if required to raise intensity (2/3 touches)

Who can be the captain? (communication). Finding spare man.

Who can press the quickest? (if required for intensity)

Key Factors

  • To develop the players understanding of breaking lines within a game scenario, and how to do it, through, around or over, depending on what pressure is bring applied.

Organisation

  • Pitch is split into 3 20y thirds, with 2 full size goals.
  • 2 teams of 7v7, based on a squad of 16.
    •  If only 1 GK place poles 1m in from post, with a ball on the cone to act as goal/bonus point.
      • If uneven numbers, a common player can be added.
    • Leave bibs in grid.
    • Teams set up in a 331 system which is worked back from a 433.
      • Left/Right sided CB acts also as the full back when in play
      • Wide midfielder also acts as winger when in play

Explanation

  • Teams only ever occupy 2 thirds.
  • Objective is to play a ball into the final third, by breaking the back line. This third is out of bounds until the line is broke.
  • When the line is broke, All players can move into the final third, and must vacate the defensive third (pushing up). This third is now out of bounds.
  • Both teams are focusing on the in possession principle of breaking the line.

Coaching Points (In Possession)
  • Make the pitch big in possession (width & depth).
  • Limit touches and move the ball quick.
  • Body shape to see as much of the pitch.
  • Through, around or over.
  • Make forward runs, trust your team mate.
  • Time runs, hold runs, and be creative with your runs.
  • When is the best time to break the lines? Counter attack.
  • Get your head up, to see the picture.
  • Be brave!

Targets/Challanges/Conditions
  • 1 point for passing around the defensive team.
  • 2 points for passing through the defensive team
  • 3 points for a goal.
  • Limit touches if required.
  • Give defenders a time limit to get up with play when line is broke if required.
