Description

This session is focused on how to shield protect the ball under pressure. Focusing on using strgth and good technique to keep the ball away from an opponent. Encourage players to underdtand what is the best way they can aceive this. For example small players need to manouver the ball and move into space where as stronger players can use their phycial advantage to hold off players.

5 C focus:

The 5 C focus for this session is commitment and desire to get to the ball or to tackle the player who gets to the ball 1st.   Also high levels of concentration are required to keep the session quality high and to be alert and aware.

King of the ring handball

After player led warm up and stretching

Area:

Create a chanel 12 yards wide x 24 yards long with cones half way as shown.

Equipment:

Cones/poles, balls

Objective:

Players have a ball which they hold in their hand. they are not allowed to secure the ball, swap or use another hand. It is a king of the ring style game where you try and knock off your opponents ball without losing yours. when your ball is knocked off you are out and leave the square. After 30 seconds and players still remain, condense them into one of the smaller 12 x 12 yard squares for 10 seconds. then repeat.

Key objective:

This naturally teaches players to turn away from danger and keep the ball at arms length away from opponent, move away from danger into space and the need for constant scanning from all sides.

Area:

create a square with cones or poles 12 yards x 12 yards. Duplicate for aditional groups as shown.

Equipment:

Cones/poles, balls.

Objective:

This is a fixed constant practice to repeat a swivel turn and a U turn to shield the ball away from an opponent. The starting point is No.1 . from here the player dribbles up to the cone No.2 and performs a right foot swivel turn. They then dribble up to the next cone No.3 where they will perform a U turn and pass back to the next player at point No.1 who repeats. Once players are executing well change sides so players are performing a left foot swivel turn.

Key points:

The technical aspects will be shown by the coach but the main points are to step over the ball and put your body between you and the cone/opponent. Put out a locked arm to hold off the opponent on both types of turn. manipulate the ball quickly to keep the ball away from the opponent. glance up and look at team mate who you are passing back to to set accuracy.

Progression:

Once players can execute the turns well, put in a defender to act as passive pressure. The defender shadows the player inbetween cones No.2 to No.3 and then returns to shadow the next player. swap defender over regularly. Do this also with left side.

50/50 shielding

Area:

Create a chanel 12 yards wide x 24 yards long with cones half way as shown. Duplicate for as many players as you require. approx 4 or 6 players per channel.

Equipment:

Cones/poles, balls

Objective:

Split players into channels (approx 4 to 6 in each). 2 players stand side by side on start line. On the call of GO! or whistle they race to the 12 yard halfway line then jog through to the other end. Remaining players repeat till all players are at same end. Get players to swap partners so they are racing different people. After 2 or 3 runs explain thaat you want them to use their arms and physicality to get accross their opponent and stop them getting past. Observe if this has made a difference to the outcome of the races.

Key points:

Ensure players use their arm to lean accross opponent and use clentch fist to ad strength. Show desire and determination to beat you opponent. Run across them not allowing them to get past and block woth your arms. Ensure the players arms are not too high as this could endanger an opponent by accidently striking them in the face.

50/50 shielding

Progression 1

Introduce a ball. Have a team mate throw the ball into the far 12 yard square (shaded) both players chase and compete to get the ball. The player with the ball has to try and keep possesion within the square for 5 seconds without being tackled. The other player is trying to tackle them and if they hold out without being tackled they win a point. Again swap over players so you are competing against different people.

Key Points:

Use strength to shield the ball. use ball matery skills to manipulate ball away from player.

Progression 2

Introduce a ball. Both players lineup and compete to get the ball. They have to do a shuttle run to half way, back to start line then run to far end box where player passes the ball into. The player who gets to the ball first needs to protect and shield the ball for 5 seconds then pass the ball back to the player who passed. 2 new players start from the end the passing player was so players alternate ends on rotation. Again swap over players so you are competing against different people.

Progression 3:

Get the player to throw the ball in the air or vary the ball flight so the players coming to the ball have to adapt and react differently.

Key Points:

Use strength to shield the ball. use ball matery skills to manipulate ball away from player. When balls are in the air it is important to get the ball back onto the floor as quickly as possible so you have full control and dictate the situation.

End of training match

Depending on time put restrictions to promote shielding. 3 seconds on the ball. then you can't travel. You have to protect the ball, manouvre and pass or shield so a team mate can collect the ball.
