WHEN: The opponent is trying to build up an attack around midfield and you want to stop them from penetrating past your team
WHY: To maintain a better defensive shape and control the space behind and in front of our defensive block

INTENSITY: Moderate ACTIVITY TIME: 3 mins REST: 1 min INTERVALS: 5
Activity:
- (2) Outside Players start with ball and try to play into one of the (4) attacking players. Once attacking players receive ball, they turn out and try to play forwrd towards one of the (2) small goals.
- (4) Defenders are looking to drop off or pressure the ball.
- Attacker can score from anywhere.
- If the defender team win the ball they look to get the ball back to the start line
Progression:
1) Add scoring element for both teams.
2) Defending team earn points for connecting with 2 midfielders.
3) Add CDM (#6) to defending unit if attackers having too much success.
Coaching Points:
1) If no pressure on ball (attacker) then defenders need to drop off, in order to cover the goal/space behind.
2) If defenders can get pressure on the ball (attacker) then rest of defenders look to squeeze the space.
3) Defending Principles of Play - pressure, cover, support, balance, compactness.

INTENSITY: Moderate ACTIVITY TIME: 5 mins REST: 1 min INTERVALS: 4
Activity:
- Play 5v5 in middle third, each player must match up 1v1 and can only tackle the player they are marking.
- Sweeper player must stay in final 1/3 and can only have 3 touches.
- Players without ball are now looking for cues of when to pressure or when to drop.
Coaching points:
1) If "sweeper" has taken touch or two then players defending should know about to pass. Can we tighten up, step in front of who you are matched up on. Squeeze the space.
2) If player with ball is facing own goal or has head down, then press and squeeze space.
3) Players behind look for cues of when to squeeze and when to drop.

Progression:
- Player may pass to left or right, then run to line opposite side passed to. Player across from ball must read the cues and is still applying pressure.
Coaching Points
1. Angle of movement to press the ball
2. Speed of press - fast, slow, get low.
3. Body position - side on, deflect the play.
