Aim

1. To give GK confidence to go to ground whilst under pressure from Attacker.

2. To give GK confidence in a 1v's1 scenario

GK1 starts in area approx 2-3 yards off line, GK 2 starts on the 18yd box in line with the Penalty spot.

1.
  • Coach calls out a number, GK moves forwards towards the cone called.
  • If Numbers 1 or 5 are called then the GK goes to ground smothering the ball, if 2,3 or 4 are called, then the GK is to stop in front of the ball using the long barrier - arms out.
As the Goalkeeper becomes more confident with the contact of the floor, the coach can progress the warm-up.

2.

  • When the Coach calls out numbers 2-4 this time, GK2 advances attempting to beat GK1 to the ball, knocking the ball away if he gets there first.

3.

  • When the Coach calls out numbers 2-4 this time, GK2 advances attempting to beat GK1 to the ball, This time though, GK2 strikes the ball towards GK1 at 50% power.

Mechanics and Key Factors

  • Focus on starting position.
  • Assessment - Angle/Speed of approach & Angle/Distance from the ball.
  • Put onus on the attacker
  • Move down the line when the ball is out of the attackers’ feet
  • Decision (Securing / blocking / delaying)
  • Smother/Deflect, Use leading hand, Quick Movement, Committed

  • Securing - GK Dives on the ball and keeps possession (GK's first thought should always be 'Can I win it?').
  • Blocking - GK is not able to get close enough to diveon the ball before the Attacker shoots, so GK blocks the ball as its struck.
  • Delaying - GK can not dive on ball so delays Attacker long enough for Defender to assist - When delaying, GK is to be on front foot and ready as opportunity may arise to secure ball or Attacker may attempt to round GK and a reaction is required.

Goalkeeping

  • Set Position - Head fixed on ball - Elbows bent - Hands out in front and the width of a football apart - Feet shoulder width apart - Nose in-front of toes - Knees bent and heels up.
  • The W's - Thumbs together (to form the shape of a W with forefingers) - Rest of fingers spread out around ball - Eyes fixed on ball - Elbows slightly bent to act as suspension - Weight forwards.
  • The Cup - Little fingers together - Palm of hands facing out - Fingers spread - Body Shape arched over ball - Weight Forwards..
  • Diving - Closest leg steps forward in the direction of dive - Stepping leg bends slightly to provide the power to push off for the dive - Hands move in the direction of the ball - Eyes fixed on the ball - Catching the ball using the 'W's' and 'Scoop' technique depending on position of the ball.
  • 1 vs 1 - Focus on starting position - Angle/distance from the ball - Assessment - Angle/speed of approach - Put onus on the attacker - Move down the line when theball is out of the attackers’ feet - Decision (Stand, Delay, Etc...)  Smother/Deflect,Use leading hand,Quick Movement, Committed.

Technical

  • Attackers stood on the Red cones, GK's on the line.
  • Coach calls out number and the attacker on the cone associated with number runs onto the ball placed infront of him.
  • Attacker then dribbles the ball towards the GK.
  • GK advances and makes the decision to Stand up/Delay-Stay Big-Force Wide.
Note:
  • How early does the GK make the assessment?
  • Does the GK go down to ealy/late?
  • Does the GK look to block where they could secure?
  • Does the GK move down the line/angle with goal?
