Learning Objectives

Technical Technical
How to successfully cross the ball/how to finish with one touch, on the volley, and with headers
Technical Tactical
How to get on the end of crosses, bend your run, peal off your defenders. Knowing when and where to cross.

Warm Up (10 mins)

Players on the outside have a ball in their hard and toss it to a player on the inside who is checking to the ball. That player volleys the ball back to them, then turns, and checks to another player with a ball.

Players switch roles after 1 minute. Change the technique each round from inside of the foot, to laces, to headers (for those teams who are of heading age).

Coaching Points:

- Focus on technique

-Good body shape

-Lock your ankle

-Make contact with the middle of the ball.

-Watch your foot hit the ball (dont lift your head)

Warm Up Progression (15 mins)

Warm up Progression w/Focus on Cross and Finish

Organization

- 2 Mini goals at each end

- 3 cones out wide, 1 yd apart

- One cone in middle

Instructions

- The line with the ball dribbles through the cones

- Dribbles to the end line and crosses the ball into the middle for the other line to finsh on goal.

- Player in middle runs on to cross and finishes

- Switch lines after that.

Coaching Points

- Small touches thru the cones

- Big touch to end line

- Head up to see teammate for cross

- Type of cross

- Timing of run into box

- First touch forwards (Progression)

Progressions

- Receiving player runs around cone out wide

- Dribbling player cuts cross backwards to top of box

- Receiving player takes first touch out and shoots on second touch

Cross Off A Dribble (15 mins)

SetUp

Two 20x10, Two 3 Yard Gates in the middle

Organization

A) Player 1 starts with the ball and dribbles forward at speed. Judging the angle the player must cut the ball back through the gate to player 2 and join the opposite line. The sequence continues. Introduce two balls.

Progressions

- Change sides/rotation

- Player now dribbles past the gate, performs a cut/fake cross before crossing with opposite foot

B) Add no-tackle defender

Coaching Points

Encourage cross with correct angle and weight

Players should be encouraged to receive/collect the ball on the move

Finish From a Cross (15 mins)

Organization:

As shown.

Instructions:

Feeder (1) passes to shooter (4) who strikes first time on goal. After shot, feeder runs around cone 2 then looks for the pass from 3 to have a shot. Rotation: 1-2-3-4. All finishes should be one touch.

Coaching Points:

- Quality of set - play so the shooter can run onto it

- Communication - Hands and voice

- Put your foot through the ball

- Find the corners
