Technical (15 mins)

Heading Technical Drill (15 Minutes)

Session Aims - To improve Technique of Heading the ball and the different areas to head the ball based on the siutaion - To improve decision making on heading the ball in a pressured enviroment.

Organisation

- 4-6 Red & Blue Bibs

- 8-12 Players (8 Used within Diagram)

- 6-8 Balls (For Rotation)

- Area: Open area within the SSG area, allowing players space (Can change based on Age & Ability)

Drill Layout -

Players are selected into two groups (Reds & Blues in Diagram) - Only valid during Skill + SSG

Players will go into pairs taking one ball each and spacing out allowing a good amount of space between each pair and themselves.

The servers will play the ball into the players who will head the ball back to the server and repeat, focussing on the mechnics of heading the ball.

- Aiming for the server heading the middle of the ball for accuracy

- Heading the Top of the Ball for Attacking header

- Heading the bottom of the Ball for Defending header

Swaps servers after you're confident all current recievers have learnt the specified mechanics. E.G once the receiving group have 'nailed' heading the centre of the ball swap servers.

Key Points -

- Ensure players are making correct contact with the ball

- Use the Coaching Process to Correct any bad habits or technical breakdowns

- Encourage players to focus on heading towards their partner to minimise the amount of balls going wayward

Progressions -

The server of the ball may call out wether their partner must make an attacking or defensive header as they serve it to the reciever.

Technique Mechanics to apply -

Heading -

1: Eyes Open

2: Head Ball using Forehead

3: Use Neck and Back Muscles for additional Power

4: Arms out for Balance

5: Stay on Toes

Attacking -

6: Head the Top to Middle of the Ball (For Best Contact)

7: Attempt Accuracy

Defending -

6: Head the Middle to Bottom of the ball (For Best Contact)

7: Head for Height and Distance

Organisation

Drill Layout -

Players are now sepersated nto their two teams (Reds & Blues in Diagram)

Each team have one server on the end zone of each side ofthe pitc to represent goalkeepers. These goalkeepers role is to recieve a headed ball from the opposite team to score a point. Players will use their hands like a game of handball. When in possession, the player can onl move on the standing leg and players without the ball can move. Plyaers must work together to get the ball into a position to throw the ball into a teamate to head to the goalkeeper. Swaapping goalkeepers regulary to allow equal playing time.

- Ensure players are making correct contact with the ball

- Use the Coaching Process to Correct any bad habits or technical breakdowns

- Encourage players to move into space to make themselves open for a pass or header

Progressions -

Players are now challenged to involve all players in each possession to score a point.

Organisation

- 4-6 Red & Blue Bibs

- 8-12 Players (10 Used within Diagram)

- 6-8 Balls (For Rotation)

- 20 Cones (Mark Corner Zones)

- Area: 30x25 With 4 3x3 Squares in each corner (Can change based on Age & Ability)

Drill Layout -

Players are in two teams (Reds & Blues in Diagram)

- Free play

- Players are now encouraged to dribble into an attacking corner where they're able to freely pick the ball up and throw the ball into the box for their teamates to attack the ball with a header to score. Two points per headed goal and one per normal goal.

- Players now get the option to freely cross the ball into the danger area for teamates to head and score, 5 points if successfully done.

- Players can only score by putting the ball into the danger zone from a corner square which remains open and unpressured.
