Method: Warm up 10 minutes.

Coaching Points:  Standard warm up using the entire area of the box.

  • Strength and conditioning coach takes the warm up ideally in the centre, going through a planed warm up.
  • Firstly starting off with an easy jog around the box, including arm swings, change of direction, getting the players warm.
  • Moving onto some dynamic stretching trying to include all muscle groups.
  • Once warm and stretched add in three footballs getting the players moving and passing limiting touches to two then one. 
  • After the ball work pair the players up. Here we are working on getting max speed but also trying to get past a defender. One will be an attacker, the other a defender. The attacker will have a bib tucked into their top and their aim is to get past the defender with the bib intact. Repeat this 3 times with each player having a shot at being the attacker and the defender.
  • The aim is to get the players warmed up and ready, reaching max speed before going into the session and also for the attackers to get into the mindset of attacking and trying to beat the defender.

Method: 3v3 attackers attacking 

Coaching Points: 2 3v3 grids 

 

  • 6 teams of 3 players. Winning team stays on the pitch with losing team swapping out with the three players on the outside ready to go on.
  • 2 minute games x 6 rounds 
  • The aim of the drill is to get as many successful attacks in ending up with the goal.
  • Emphasis on good starting positions while moving the ball and creating angles and attacking the opposition.
  • High pace game with two coaches leading each group or the one coach in the centre.
  • Emphasis also on the transition to defend when attacking team loses the ball. Winner stays on will encourage the team to defend the transition.

Method: 4 v 2 with transition to defend.

Coaching Points: 

 

Organisation :

  •  4 v 2 game 
  • Red team have two defenders on the pitch. The other two red defenders are off the pitch feeding the ball into the attacking team. Two defenders switch with other pair feeding the balls after two blue attacks.
  • Blue team are attacking the two red defenders, they have an overload of two players.
  • Emphasis on starting the attack with pace using the overload in wide areas and finish the attack with a goal or shot on target. 
  • If the blue team miss the target they have to do a recovery sprint back to their starting positions, replicating a transition to defend.
  • Encourage blue team to have good movement on and off the ball, moving the two defenders to create a scoring opportunity.
Progression :

  • How many goals can the blue team get in a number of attacks.
  • Set out that number for example how many goals can the blue team score in 8 attacks.
  • Now if blue team hit the target they still have to do the recovery sprint back, if they score they do not have to sprint back.

Method: Attackers attacking within a 9v9 game with transition to defend.

Coaching Points:


Red team : Set up in at 1-4-3-3 (Attacking team)

Blue team : Set up in a 1-4-3-3 (Defending team)                


Using the full pitch cutting off the attacking teams full backs and defending teams wingers.


Principals of play

  • The ball starts with the Goal keeper taking a kick out. Encourage each player to have a good starting position, willing to get on the ball and providing depth.
  • CB receive the ball with an open body shape taking their first touch on their back foot so they can go forward straight away.
  • Holding centre midfielder provides depth and a passing option with a good body position and constant scanning to see what is around them. Already knowing their next move before the ball has been played to them.
  • The two higher midfielders play in between the lines and are higher than the holding midfielder. Always being that higher option for even the centre backs to go directly into them.
  • Constant movement off the ball even if the player is not going to recieve the ball they are moving the opposition which could open up a better passing lane for another player an potential attack on the oppositions goal.
  • Front three staying high and wide, left and right side of the three providing the depth and width and taking the ball on back foot to penetrate down the wing.
  • Centre forward is strong
