Defending Corner Kicks

Organization:

Set up as shown.

Defending Corner Kicks - Direct Play and Short Play.

Session starts as a shadow play with no attackers. All corners are defended the same way, with a combination of zonal defending and man to man marking. Goalkeeper and commanding center back to be in charge of organization and positioning of the players.

Responsibilities when defending corner kicks:

- Early organization.

- GK to take charge of marking assignments. GK should be loud, commanding and be brave to come out catch balls played inside the six yard box and sometimes outside of the six yard box.

- 3 players mark zones i.e. near post, center and back post while other 3 players mark up man to man i.e touch tight.

- Best defender in the air marks opposition's most dangerous player.

- The ball must be cleared into the flanks.

- Center back yells "OUT" once the ball is cleared and push up the back line.

- On short corners, the player on the near post react quickly by stepping up and defend with another player man marking to make it a 2v2 situation while the remaining players react accordingly.

Coaching Points:

1. Players marking zones should stay in their zones but react accordingly, don't chase the ball, but be ready to press. Stay within 2-3 yds of your position unless you must move.

2. Players man-marking should stay touch tight with opposition players that they are marking. Trust your teammates to do their jobs.

3. Be aware of runners to press. Track runners in your zone and pass on (communicate) with other players.

4. Always stay side on and goal side to be able to see the ball and your man.

5. React quickly to second and third balls.

6. Be brave to attack the ball.

7. Clear first, then transition to counter attack.

Progressions:

Exercise progresses to conditioned game.

Attacking Corner Kicks.

Instructions:

-Play a regular 6v6 game. Each time the ball leaves play, the coach signals for a corner kick and the side that a set piece will be delivered from. Neutrals are designated as the corner kick takers and are rotated at intervals in order to have different corner kick takers.

-Corner kick taker signals where the ball would be delivered inside the box (1 hand up means near post delivery, both hands up means back post delivery and when the ball is raised up in the air, it means ball will be delivered in and around the penalty spot area).

- Five players are positioned outside the 18 yard box (one runs to front post, one to center of goal who stays on goalkeeper, one to back post, one to the penalty spot and one stays at the edge of the box).

-Best attacker in the air runs into the area where the ball is expected to be delivered.

-Trigger for the delivery i.e. the player that stays on the GK.

Defending Corner Kicks.

Instructions:

- Early organization. GK to take charge of marking assignments.

- Players mark up man to man.

- Best defender in the air marks opposition's most dangerous player.

Coaching Points:

- Man to man marking (don't lose your battle!).

- Stay on goal side of the attacker.
