Back to Goal - 1v1 (15 mins)

Organization:

  • 1v1 back to goal entry
  • Instructions:
  • (1) plays to a checking (2), Defender (3) is live on release of the ball
  • (2) must check into a a specific quarter field off angle to ball 
  • (2) can score in either half space mini goals
  • (3) can counter to middle goal

Coaching Points/Questions:

  • What are we scanning for prior to receive ball? 
  • Body shape to go forward
  • Weight of pass. 
  • Positive 1v1 when facing up defender
  • Separation from def (movement to get on the ball half turn)

Progressions:

  • 2v1 (1) follows and supports
  • 2v2 defenders pass and score = 2 goals

1v1s - Entry back to goal (20 mins)

Instructions:
- Red team plays to central teammate who has 3 touches to finish in a mini goal (diagonal entry) - open up drive and finish (unopposed)

-  Blue team then passes ball into Red and presses Red on pass

- If GK makes save, ball should be played to Blue for counter - 1 phase only

- Red scores both goals = 3 goals (otherwise - 1 goal only)

- Blue prevents shot = 1 goal

- Blue wins possession back and scores = 3

Coaching Points:

- Body position 

- Movement to separate to open on 1st touch

- Attack/drive into space behind

- Change of speed and cut across Defenders recovery line

- Create yard either side of defender to shoot

- Mentality to prevent shot from Blue Def

- Counter press loss of possession (red)

Keep score and swap after 4 rotations for each player...

2v2/3v3 (20 mins)

Instructions:
- Red team plays to central teammate who checks high and back to ball - on 1st touch reds can support

- Upon 2v2 A/B Red vs A/B Blue - score, ball natural stoppage. Waiting A passes into Red C and Blue C join in phase 2 = 3v3

- Blue team then passes ball into Red and presses Red on pass

- If GK makes save, ball should be played to Blue for counter 

- Blue wins possession back and scores = 2

Coaching Points:

- Body position 

- Movement to separate to open on 1st touch

- Attack/drive into space behind

- Change of speed and cut across Defenders recovery line

- Create yard either side of defender to shoot

- Mentality to prevent shot from Blue Def

- Counter press loss of possession (red)

Rotation after each 3v3: A to B to C to A

Keep score and swap after 4 rotations for each player...

3v3 Tournament (20 mins)

Instructions:
  • 3v3 tournament.
  • Every re-entry teams play pass into highest player with pressure on back, then play Live after 1st touch (example A above)
  • If a team wins, they move up a pitch and if they lose they move down a pitch.
  • Run games for 3-5 minutes.
  • Try to encourage lots of 1v1s
  • If odd numbers, one field can have neutral or number down team starts 1-0 up.
  • If odd number of teams, then the team that wins on pitch 1 (the highest pitch) gets a rest and returns as champion to beat

  • Overload and exploit
  • Positive 1st touch on the turn
  • Movement to drag defenders away to exploit
  • Penetrate vs Possession
  • 1v1 with space behind
  • Finish on the run
