Positioning Game - 6 v 6 + 3 (15 mins)

15 Players Available. Utilise GK here too as a connecting field player to promote ball distribution and movement. Field dimension is approx 25m wide by 35m long, don't want easy passage through central areas, the onus is on the central yellow player to find this space in a passing lane and take advantage to help the BP team.

  • 6 v 6 + 3 (Yellow Bib) Overload Players.
  • Aim is to transition the ball from one end to the other, as effectively and efficiently as possible.
  • Passage of play must include the use of the central (yellow) overload player at least once per cycle.
  • 3 Yellow Overload Players alternate positions regularly between themselves, either being a wide support or central support option (mid third of grid).
  • When the player (from either the red shirt team or white shirt team) completes the final pass into their teammate on the end zone line, they switch positions. Passer becomes end line player, end line player carries ball into the grid at speed and initiates the move to towards the opposite end in continuous sequence.
  • End line players can't tackle each other initially, but can slide along the line to present for the ball.
Progressions:
  • Make the end line zone a 1v1 battle to receive/intercept the ball coming in from the grid. Promotes 1v1 ability/deception/strength to get into position for receiving.
  • Make the Yellow Overload players have a limit of 1 touch (if capable).

Game Training (25 mins)

Game Training Segment: We are aiming to come up with some success with getting the ball into the middle third.

We will work from a variety of situations, including from goal kicks, keeper catches (in play), throw ins, etc.

Setup/Rules:

  • White Bib Team act as the opposition, trying to pressure the Red/Black team into errors.
  • The White Bib team shape is 2 - 3, whilst the Red/Black team is in the typical 1-4-2 setup.
  • There will also be a Yellow player in the marked zone near halfway. This player has 2 jobs.
  • When the Red/Black team is in possession, they must involve this Yellow Player at least once in the buildup to a goal in one of the two mini nets on halfway. This can either be through them scoring in the mini net or laying it off in the build up for someone else to score.
  • When the White Bib Team wins possession, they have 10 seconds to try and score - and in that 10 second period the Yellow Player will become an extra attacking option to support play.
  • They can move where they like in that 10 second period with the attacking unit before reverting back to the marked zone for the next sequence of play.
Progressions:
  • Red/Black Team - If the Yellow Player scores with first touch finish or lays off to someone else for a 1st touch finish - goal is worth 2 points.
  • White Bib Team - If able to win possession and score within 2 passes - goal is worth 2 points.
Coaching Aspects:
  • Starting Positions and Body Shape of the 3 and 4 from a goal kick.
  • Responsibility of the 2 and 5, relative to position of the ball in play.
  • #6 and/or #8 - looking for the right moment to "drop in" to receive.
  • Movement and recognition of opportunities to receive the ball (Yellow Free Player)
  • Ensuring that the White Bib Team are not penetrated too easily in Central Areas - must make it challenging for the Red/Black team to reach their Yellow man in the zone.

Bonus - Finishing Activity (15 mins)

Bonus Finishing Activity:

  • 1v1 Battle (Shaded Area), jostling for position and reacting to coaches call (Coach C).
  • Coach A or Coach B (alternating sides) play a weighted through ball for the overlapping winger to arrive onto and cutback/cross to the player from the shaded area who arrives in front position to score with a first touch finish.
  • After the play, the two attackers rotate back out around the outside of the grid so as not to get in the way of the next sequence.

Progressions:
  • Rotate the attackers into each wing on their way back from the shot action, bring Wingers into the 1v1 battle zone.
  • Consider the opposition winger trailing at the back for an missed crossed from the opposite flank.
