Long - Zonal/Hybrid

Set Up

10 players back (GK plus 9).

Player 1 is 2 or 3 yards in front of the front post. Deal with short, flat or under hit corners.

Players 2/3/4 start 1 yard in from the goal line & are responsible for the shaded areas in front of them. Attack the ball!

Players M are markers and deal with obvious opposition threat from tall players/groups of players (“bus queues” & “blobs”). 

Player 5 patrols the top of the 18 yard box for half clearances or pull backs. 

Player 6 waits in the area shown for clearances/passes out from defence (same side as the corner is taken). 

General Rule! IF THE GK CALLS CONFIDENTLY FOR A BALL IN THE 6 YARD BOX THE DEFENDERS SHOULD ALLOW THE GK TO MAKE THE CATCH/PUNCH.

Players 1 & 5 close down the space around the short corner. 

Player 6 drops deeper & more central to cover the space at the top of the 18 yard box. 

All other jobs remain the same.

Players 1 & 2 defend inside the posts.

Player 3 defends any player from the opposition who marks the GK. 

All M players are markers and must take responsibility for an attacking player, following any runs & attacking the ball. 

Player 4 is looking for clearances, passes out of defence.
