Tiki-Taka Touches (10 mins)

Organization: In a grid of just 10 x 10 yards have your players, each with a ball.

Instructions: In 4 or 5 incruments of 30 or 45 seconds (coaches call) instruct your players to perform different dribble techniques. Try and set a move count/touch limit. I start out with toe touches on top the ball, stationary, then after that I'll ask them to move the ball around only using toe touches. Then I repeat using other techniques.

Coaching Points: Be careful not to set the touch goal too high but then again not too low so it allows kids to be laxidazical with it. Try to make it a little competition, see who can get the most touches, egg each one on to get more touches than his/her neighbor.

(I use toe touches, boxing 'where you move the ball from left to right inbetween your feet as quick as you can', then incorporate a step over and a cruyff turn)

BE SURE TO EMPHASIZE SPACIAL AWARENESS, you have 10 square yards to work with.

Shifting Gears (15 mins)

Organization: Two 10 x 10 yd grids with 4 or 5 different colored cones sporadically placed in the grid. Two other colored cones are used to create one goal in each grid, place the goals on the inside of the grids so that the goals face one another but on opposite ends of the grids (not directly lined up).

Instructions: Players are to dribble around avoiding both the cones in the grids and the other players. Remember, avoiding does not mean disregarding completely, avoiding as in using a soccer specific move to 'avoid' a challenge. At your command, say "Switch Fields", at hearing that your players are to dribble out of the 'goal' on the side of their grid and through the opposite grids 'goal' without losing posession.

Coaching Points: Focus on close control, keeping your head up and on a swivel. Focus on quick, confident use of the specific skills we have been covering, allow still for creativity!!

Progressions: This drill is called "Shifting Gears" this is because, to your disgression, while your players are dribbling around the grids within the cones use different commands to signal a shift in the players speeds: 1st gear, easy jog. 2nd gear, medium run. 3rd gear, should be as quick as the player can while still keeping the ball well under control in the area (allow for skill level differences here). To make this drill a bit more difficult add more cones, players, or a defender in the middle of the grids trying to tackle as they switch fields.

Save Image: Football/Soccer Session Plan Drill (Colour): 3v2 > 2v1 > 1v1 Create Video:

3v2 > 2v1 > 1v1 (20 mins)

Organization: 3v2 to 2v1 to 1v1; two counterattack goals are attacked by the defenders for the 2v1.

Instructions: start with 3v2 towards big goal, the player who shoots at the goal (and scores or goes out of play) becomes the 1 defender in the 2v1 the defenders have towards the counter attack goals. The defender who shoots at (and makes or misses) the little goals becomes the defender in the 1v1 towards the big goal. After that, start back with a 3v2 with the ball being played from the defenders.

Coaching Points: THE TRANSITIONS SHOULD BE QUICK!!! and so should the opportunities taken, use one of the dribbling moves you discussed earlier to create just enough space for a killer pace or room for a strike. After the shot is taken the now attacking team should get a ball and begin right away, counterattack with pace, try to catch each other out.

Progressions:

5v5 full feild (15 mins)

Organization: 5v5 full or almost full field with full soccer rules,

Instructions: Just play and coach with the flow, this is where it all comes together and you make final critiques.

Coaching Points: Emphasize what was worked on earlier, spacial awareness, confidence (in yourself and teammates), and create whatever space you can with the moves
