Handling and distribution (15 mins)

Goalkeeping Distribution

In this drill we start with player 1 throwing the ball to take a high catch. On doing this the coach shouts out a number of a player and the goalkeeper then decides to throw or kick the ball to that player.

I would encourage the coach to mix the serving to the keeper high ball, low ball, shots back passes etc. The coach can also work on ball control when the goalkeeper distributes the ball.

Its important for the goalkeeper to have a variety methods of distribution.

Under pressure, clearing their lines. (15 mins)

Goalkeeper under pressure.

In this drill again we ensure the goalkeeper varies his distribution.

We play various back passes from players 1, 2 or 3 with the 2 opposition strikers pressurising the goalkeeper.

Players 1 to 3 should move into space to assist the goalkeepers clearance or the keeper can go long to 4,5 or 6.

A variant on this is for 4,5 or 6 to play a through ball between the keeper and defence for the keeper to quickly move and clear. this will require the defensive line to push higher up the pitch.

Coaching point

Its important the defenders support the keeper and give an easy short option.
