SSG - Teamwork: Attacking & defending

An SSG incorporating playing out of the back; counter attacking movement; defensive re-grouping and team work.

Organisation:

40 x 30 m pitch with two goals

8 players (4 v 4)

No goalkeepers

Rules:

The team in possession can only enter their own defensive third and the 'neutral' third (shown as shaded area).

The defensive team have to remain in their defensive third when not in possession and defending.

If the ball goes out of play, a free pass is made.

Progressions:

Each player must have a touch on the ball before a shot is taken

A time limit is given before a shot must be made or possession is handed over the other team

Add in a neutral players that has to be the last person to lay the ball off before a shot is taken

Limit the number of touches

Objectives:

Offensively:

Passing the ball accurately to keep possession

Moving the ball forward and into an area where a shot can be taken (and there is no defensive player blocking you)

Laying the ball off to a team mate to strike the ball with power

Defensively:

Retreating to your defensive third quickly

Communication and team work to block the angles to stop the opposition scoring

This is a fast moving game which continually moves from attacking to defensive transitions.
