Structuring a practice: Tempo in possession of the ball
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Organisation:
'The passing triangle'
In an area 20 x 20 m (can be adjusted to suit needs), you play 3 v 1.
Encourage the team with the ball to always retain the 'triangle' shape, as that will always create two passing options for the player in possession.
Rotate players every minute, as this is a physically demanding session for everyone.
Coaching points:
- Communication
- Movement to receive
- Weight / accuracy of pass
- Encourage the least amount of touches possible to increase tempo

'Three cone goal'
30 x 20 m area with three tall cones set out in a triangle, approx 3-4m apart with a GK.
Reds v blues. Can they pass the ball with a high tempo and create a scoring opportunity through one of the three goals (the spaces between the tall cones).
This is a high tempo game, with the GK also working hard to cover three areas.

RONDO (15 mins)
'El Rondo' - made famous by FC Barcelona
Circle marked out by cones. Can be adjusted to suit numbers, ability etc.
10 players in this illustration, playing 8 v 2.
Objective:
Can the red team keep possession of the ball away from the blue players
Progressions:
- Do not pass to the player next to you
- Can you make the 'split' pass through the two defenders
- One / two touch
Quick rotation of players (every minute) as this is a fast tempo exercise and physically demanding for the defenders
Coaching points:
- Communication
- Scan the pitch so you know where your passing options are
- Use the least amount of touches as possible. Don't slow it down as the defenders have time to press and become organised.
