Football/Soccer Session (Moderate): 2+2 V 2+2: POSSESSION GAME

2+2 V 2+2:

THE SETUP

- The playing area is about 30 x 20 yards

- There are two teams with four players each, two start inside the playing area while the remaining two stand on opposite sides of the playing area

- One ball

THE RULES

- One team, inside the box, starts with possession at random

- The two players inside the box are tasked with keeping possession of the ball

- They may pass the ball to their team-mate, standing outside the playing area, on either side in order to maintain possession

- If the defending team wins the ball, they will take over the same role of maintaining possession

- Every time the ball is passed to one of the players on the outside, the outside-player dribbles the ball inside to become a part of the 2v2, swapping places with the player who passed the ball to her/him

- The players on the outside can only move along their line of play

Play this game out as part of your technical/tactical practice session, before moving into the small sided game.

PROGRESSIONS

- Players are forced to play one-touch or two-touch

COACHING POINTS

- Good verbal and non-verbal communication

- Quality of movement

- Focus on spreading out and creating space to receive a pass

- Focus on narrowing the playing field, for the defending team, and cutting out angles for passes

- Sharp and slick passing

- Dribbling using various special moves and skills

- Focus on transition from attack to defence

- Defence must focus on marking players and marking “goal-side” of the closest outside-opposition player
