Drills and SSG to improve and enhance shooting skills
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Organisation:
40mx30m area split in half.
2 mini goals in the corner of each half
Numerous players and balls
Drill:
Players dribble the ball from position A toward the defender in position B. It becomes a 1v1, with the defender having to protect 2 goals. The attacker aims to dribble past the defender or do a trick to create space and shoot in either of the goals.
After the shot is made, the defender fetches the ball and goes to the back of the que where they become an attacker.
The initial attacker then becomes the defender, etc
The next attacker goes as soon as the ball is shot from the previous attacker, giving very little time for the defender to get ready and into positon.
This is a fast game, with multiple decision making aspects for the attackers. It also replicates speed of attack during a match situation.
Progressions:
- Shoot within 3 seconds of dribbling
- Must use specific foot to shoot
- Balls are rolled in front of the attacker and they shoot first time without taking a touch
Key points:
- Close control of the ball whilst dribbling
- Attack the open space away from the defender
- Use of tricks and feints to create space
- Accuracy of shot - hit the target!

Organisation:
40x40m square area
4 goals positoned as above
7v7, which can be amended to suit numbers in the group
Game objective:
The game is designed for multiple shots on goal; to improve decision making processes and accuracy of shooting.
Game rules:
7v7 in any direction. There are no positions or direction in which you play. You can score in any goal apart from the one a team has just scored in and where play starts from again.
Key points:
- Awareness and decision making to attack the goal with the least defenders or most chance of scoring
- Accuracy of shot
- Use of techniques already learned: open body shape to receive pass; trick/turn a defender; do a skill to dribble past a defender
- Communication & teamwork
Progressions/ Challenges:
- Can everyone score a goal? If not work as a team to allow everyone to score
- Shooting with weaker foot
- Do a trick/skill/turn before you can shoot
- Coach selects which goal the team must score in next

Organisation:
40x30m area split in half. One small goal at each end in the centre.
Numerous players and balls
Tall cones initally acting as 'defenders' and target areas for the passers.
Drill:
Players pass the ball between the two cones toward their teammate. They control the ball on the half turn, opening up their body with their first touch out of their feet and shooting on their next touch.
The player that passes the ball then becomes the attacker.
The attacking player fetches their ball from the goal and returns to the back of their que
Note: One group work on controlling the ball with their left foot and shooting with their left foot, the other group do the same but use their right foot.
Both teams have 5 minutes in each group before changing.
Progressions:
- Can a player control the ball and do a turn using the outside of their foot before shooting
- Use the passing player to chase the attacker upon receiving the ball to try and prevent a shot
Key points:
- Weight and accuracy of pass to the attacker
- Open body shape
- Control the ball using your back foot
- Strike the ball using your 'laces'
- Head over the ball to keep in low
- Hit the target!!!
